Boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. today was sentenced to 90 days in jail after a plea agreement was reached in which he plead guilty to reduced domestic violence battery and harassment charges. The hearing took place before a Las Vegas judge. His jail term begins on January 6. The sentence includes 100 hours of community service and a fine of $2,500. The guilty plea allows Mayweather to avoid a felony trial on charges of abuse from his ex-girlfriend.

The news was greeted positively by the pragmatic minded in boxing circles with because uncertainty about this case and its timetable had been a stumbling block in negotiations for a Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Superfight. Now that the case is complete and the timetable is clear, it would appear that while Mayweather would not be available for the May 5 date he has reserved at the MGM Grand, he would be available beginning in mid-June, assuming a 10 week traing camp would be required after the latest release date of April 6. It is likely that Mayweather would be released sooner than that date.
